Managing one luxury hotel requires complete attention to identity, teams, guest experience and performance. Managing several complementary properties in Venice adds another level of difficulty: each house must remain individual while the portfolio moves in one strategic direction. Salvatore Pisani, Area General Manager Venezia for Starhotels Collezione, receives Area General Manager of the Year 2026 for precisely that ability.
Salvatore Pisani received the Area General Manager of the Year 2026 distinction at the European Hotel Awards. His current responsibility spans Splendid Venice, Hotel Gabrielli Venezia and the Gabrielli Luxury Apartments, giving him oversight of different hospitality formats within one of Europe’s most complex destinations.
Multi-property leadership without erasing identity
The role of an Area General Manager is not simply the management of several hotels added together. It requires common standards, shared strategic thinking and disciplined coordination, while protecting the personality that makes each property commercially and emotionally distinct.
In Venice, that balance is especially demanding. Historic buildings, unusual logistics, strong seasonality and an international clientele create operating conditions unlike those of most European cities. A portfolio strategy has to be consistent enough to create strength, but flexible enough to respect each address and the particular relationship it has with the city.

Hotel Gabrielli: bringing a historic address back into the city
One of the most significant projects within Pisani’s scope is the rebirth of Hotel Gabrielli on Riva degli Schiavoni. The property combines historic buildings with an exceptional position facing the lagoon, close to St Mark’s Square, the Arsenal and the Biennale gardens.
Following a major restoration, the hotel reopened under Starhotels Collezione with 66 rooms and suites. The project required more than architecture and design. Reopening a house of this importance means rebuilding teams, standards, positioning and daily service so that the historic identity becomes a living hotel rather than a preserved shell.

Splendid Venice: continuity in the heart of the Serenissima
Pisani’s wider responsibility builds on his experience at Splendid Venice – Starhotels Collezione, located between St Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge. The hotel has a more intimate urban personality, shaped by canal access, Venetian interiors, gastronomy and rooftop views.
The challenge here is different from a reopening. It is about continuity: preserving a mature hotel’s reputation while ensuring that service, commercial positioning and guest expectations continue to evolve. Multi-property leadership becomes valuable precisely because lessons can move across the portfolio without making the hotels look or feel identical.

Luxury apartments as a third hospitality format
The Gabrielli Luxury Apartments extend the strategy again, offering private-residence independence combined with access to high-level hotel service. For longer stays, families or guests seeking more autonomy, this format answers a different use of Venice without duplicating the experience of the two hotels.
For an Area General Manager, such diversification raises the strategic question at the heart of the role: how can a group increase its relevance in one destination while ensuring that each product has a clear reason to exist?

Why Salvatore Pisani received Area General Manager of the Year 2026
The European Hotel Awards Board selected Salvatore Pisani because his responsibility now extends beyond the performance of a single hotel to the coherent development of a diversified luxury hospitality presence in Venice. The Award recognises his ability to coordinate established operations, a major historic reopening and a new residential product while protecting the identity of each.
The Board also considered the destination itself. Venice requires unusually sophisticated management: logistics, heritage preservation, international demand, local sensitivity and extremely high guest expectations all interact. Pisani’s experience allows operational excellence to sit inside a broader understanding of development, brand positioning and the long-term value of the city.
This is why the title is Area General Manager of the Year. The distinction recognises leadership at portfolio scale — building common direction without flattening individuality, developing new opportunities without weakening existing houses, and ensuring that several properties contribute to one destination strategy.

A leadership path already recognised
Pisani’s professional trajectory had previously been recognised in 2021 when the European Hotel Managers Association named him Italian Hotel Manager of the Year. The 2026 Award reflects a different stage of responsibility: from the leadership of a major hotel to the coordination and development of several complementary properties.
That evolution is what gives the new distinction its meaning. It acknowledges not only experience, but the capacity to use that experience at a wider scale while keeping hospitality rooted in individual houses and in the character of Venice itself.
