In the hills of Provence, Patricia Ortelli has spent more than three decades developing Château La Calisse according to a remarkably personal vision of wine. From rebuilding the vineyard to embracing organic viticulture and refining the identity of its white, rosé and red wines, her story is one of independence, patience and an enduring commitment to place.
Some wine estates are inherited. Others are built through a succession of choices that gradually become a philosophy. Château La Calisse belongs firmly to the second category.
Patricia Ortelli did not follow a conventional route into wine. Educated at the École du Louvre and specialising in Greek art, she changed direction in the early 1990s when she acquired at auction a vineyard in the hills of the Haut-Var that required extensive reconstruction.
What began as a radical change of life developed into a long-term project. Understanding the soils, observing the behaviour of individual plots, replanting the vineyard and learning how each vintage responded to the particular conditions of this corner of Provence became part of a process that has now lasted for more than thirty years.

Building a vineyard around the land rather than fashion
Today, Château La Calisse cultivates around ten hectares of vines within the Coteaux Varois en Provence appellation. Yet the scale of the estate tells only part of its story. Its identity has been shaped above all by the consistency of the choices made since Patricia Ortelli began rebuilding the vineyard.
Organic viticulture was part of that thinking long before it became one of the defining conversations of contemporary wine. From the reconstruction and planting of the vineyard in the early 1990s, attention to natural balances and to the relationship between the vine and its environment became fundamental to the estate’s approach.
At an altitude of approximately 380 metres, the vineyard benefits from limestone soils and the particular climatic conditions of the Provençal hinterland. Altitude, exposure and geology contribute to the freshness and character that Patricia Ortelli has sought to preserve in the wines.
For her, organic farming is therefore not an isolated environmental statement. It belongs to a broader idea: that the personality of a wine begins with the way its vineyard is understood and cultivated.

Patricia Ortelli: independence as a working method
One of the most distinctive aspects of Patricia Ortelli’s career is her independence. Rather than attempting to reproduce an established model of Provençal wine, she gradually developed her own interpretation of the estate and its potential.
That independence is accompanied by precision. Observation in the vineyard, careful selection of the grapes and decisions made according to the conditions of each vintage form a continuous process from the land to the cellar.
The result is not built around a single colour. Château La Calisse produces white, rosé and red wines, working with varieties including Rolle, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are harvested by hand, allowing careful selection before vinification.
This breadth is significant. Provence may be internationally associated first with rosé, but Château La Calisse’s identity extends deliberately across all three colours.

Where precision in the vineyard continues in the cellar
Respect for nature at Château La Calisse does not imply rejecting technology. The opposite is closer to Patricia Ortelli’s philosophy: modern winemaking tools are valuable when they allow the character of the fruit and vineyard to be expressed with greater precision.
The work carried out in the cellar is therefore conceived as a continuation of the work in the vineyard. Preserving freshness, respecting the fruit and understanding how individual grape varieties and blends behave are central to the process.
This combination of experience and technical precision is particularly visible across the Patricia Ortelli range and the Étoiles cuvées, where the estate explores greater depth and complexity while maintaining the balance that has become part of its signature.

A contemporary cellar designed around the wine
The architecture of the cellar reflects the same philosophy. Stone and wood coexist with contemporary winemaking equipment in a space designed first and foremost as a working environment.
Technology remains an instrument rather than an end in itself. The essential decisions still depend on knowledge of the vineyard, experience accumulated through successive vintages and the winemaker’s ability to interpret the fruit arriving at the cellar.
This dialogue between craftsmanship and modern precision has helped Château La Calisse establish an identity that is recognisably Provençal without being confined by a conventional image of Provence.
White, rosé and red: a broader expression of Provence
Over more than three decades, Château La Calisse has built recognition across its range. Its wines have been distinguished over successive vintages by French guides, competitions and the national press, including the Concours Général Agricole de Paris, Provence wine competitions and the Guide Hachette des Vins.
The significance lies not simply in the number of distinctions but in their continuity and in the fact that recognition extends across white, rosé and red wines.
This consistency reflects the underlying ambition of the estate: to produce wines defined by fruit, balance and a clear expression of their origin rather than by short-lived stylistic trends.
Étoiles and the estate’s most ambitious expression
The Étoiles cuvées occupy a distinctive place within Château La Calisse.
Étoiles white, produced notably from Rolle, Grenache Blanc and Clairette, explores the relationship between richness, complexity and freshness. The Étoiles reds reveal another side of the estate, with greater structure and wines conceived with evolution in mind.
Together, these cuvées illustrate how Patricia Ortelli’s work has developed over time. The ambition is not to separate prestige wines from the identity of the vineyard, but to explore how far that identity can be taken through selection, precision and experience.

More than thirty years of continuity
Wine is inevitably measured in vintages, yet the identity of an estate is built over much longer periods. Château La Calisse is perhaps best understood through that sense of duration.
Patricia Ortelli has spent more than thirty years observing the same landscape, refining the vineyard and developing a personal understanding of what it can produce. Her background outside the traditional wine world may have encouraged precisely the independence that became one of the estate’s strengths.
Instead of following an inherited formula, she constructed one gradually. Organic viticulture, manual harvesting, attention to individual plots and precision in the cellar are not separate elements of the story; together they form a coherent way of working.
Provence beyond the postcard
The landscape surrounding Château La Calisse is unmistakably Mediterranean. Vines, cypresses, olive trees, lavender, hills and the intense light of Provence create an environment of immediate visual appeal.
But reducing the estate to that image would miss what makes it interesting. Behind the Provençal landscape lies a working vineyard shaped through decades of decisions, experimentation and continuity.

That may ultimately be the most revealing way to understand Patricia Ortelli’s achievement. Château La Calisse is not the product of a sudden reinvention, but of a long conversation between a winemaker and a place.
More than thirty years after taking her first steps into wine, Patricia Ortelli has created a Provençal estate with an identity of its own — one defined by independence, organic viticulture, precision and an enduring belief in what its terroir can express.
