Wine is one of hospitality’s oldest forms of memory. A bottle can carry a landscape, a season and decades of decisions to the table in a single moment. In Provence, Château La Calisse has been shaped by that long view for more than thirty years. The estate and its owner, Patricia Ortelli, receive Wine Estate & Wine of the Year 2026 at the European Hotel Awards for a project built on patience, organic conviction and a precise sense of place.
Château La Calisse received the Wine Estate & Wine of the Year 2026 distinction at the European Hotel Awards. Represented by owner and winemaker Patricia Ortelli, the estate occupies a special place in an event devoted primarily to hotels and hospitality professionals. Its presence reflects a simple reality: wine is part of the art of receiving. It accompanies gastronomy, creates conversation and often becomes part of the memory guests take away from a great hotel or restaurant.
More than three decades of rebuilding a wine estate
The contemporary story of Château La Calisse begins in 1991, when Patricia Ortelli took over the property. The vineyard was not a finished estate waiting to be marketed. Parcels had to be restructured, vines replanted and the identity of the property rebuilt over time.
Viticulture makes long-term thinking unavoidable. A decision in the vineyard may take years before its full effect becomes visible in the glass. Planting, soil management and changes in farming practice cannot be judged on the timescale of a seasonal campaign. Château La Calisse has developed through precisely this slower logic, with the estate taking shape year after year around a consistent idea: allow the land to express itself without disguising its character.

Organic before organic became fashionable
One of the strongest elements in the estate’s story is the timing of its environmental commitment. Château La Calisse has been certified organic since 1996, long before organic wine became a major commercial category or a standard element in luxury hospitality purchasing.
That chronology matters. The decision cannot be reduced to a response to recent consumer demand. It reflects an early conviction about working with living soils, avoiding synthetic herbicides and insecticides, and accepting the additional discipline required by a more environmentally attentive form of viticulture.
Nearly three decades later, the estate benefits from the credibility that comes with continuity. Its organic identity was not added to the brand after the fact; it was built into the project while Château La Calisse itself was still being reconstructed.

A Provençal terroir interpreted through freshness and precision
At Pontevès, limestone and stony soils, altitude and natural temperature variation give the vineyard conditions in which freshness and balance can be preserved. Château La Calisse produces white, rosé and red wines, using varieties that include Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Rolle, Syrah and Grenache Noir according to the cuvée.
The common thread is not a single grape variety but a style. The wines seek clarity of fruit, precision and enough restraint for the terroir to remain legible. That philosophy has particular relevance in contemporary gastronomy, where sommeliers and chefs increasingly look for wines with a clear identity that can accompany food without overwhelming it.
For hospitality, this sense of place is especially valuable. A wine list can become a map of territories and producers, giving a hotel or restaurant another way to tell stories about origin, agriculture and culture.

Why Château La Calisse received Wine Estate & Wine of the Year 2026
The European Hotel Awards Board selected Château La Calisse because the estate brings together a remarkably coherent relationship between terroir, one woman’s long-term vision, organic practice and the patience required to build quality over decades. The distinction recognises the reconstruction of the estate since 1991, organic certification from 1996, Patricia Ortelli’s independent approach and the consistency with which the vineyard has developed its own Provençal signature.
The Award is not the result of a conventional blind tasting or a popularity ranking. Its logic is broader. Château La Calisse was chosen as a wine estate whose story has particular meaning within hospitality: the wines are not isolated products but expressions of a territory that can enter the guest experience through the restaurant, the cellar and the shared table.
This is also why the wording Wine Estate & Wine of the Year matters. The recognition concerns the whole project — the land, farming choices, continuity of ownership and philosophy behind the wines — rather than a single bottle detached from its origin.

Wine as part of the European art of hospitality
European hospitality has always been connected to wine. In great hotels and restaurants, a bottle can structure a meal, introduce a region and create a point of exchange between guests and service teams. By recognising Château La Calisse, the European Hotel Awards extend the idea of hospitality beyond the walls of the hotel and towards one of the agricultural cultures that helps give the table its meaning.
Patricia Ortelli’s achievement is therefore relevant well beyond the vineyard. It shows how consistency, environmental conviction and identity can become forms of luxury in their own right — especially when they are allowed enough time to mature.
