Wellness in a resort is no longer defined by the presence of a spa alone. Guests increasingly judge the whole stay through the quality of rest, water, light, outdoor space, treatments, food, movement and service. In the Algarve, Hilton Vilamoura has developed that broader approach with enough coherence to receive Wellness & Spa Hotel of the Year 2026 at the European Hotel Awards.
Represented by Miguel Afonso dos Santos, Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa places wellbeing at the centre of a resort experience rather than treating it as an optional add-on. Its identity connects spa facilities with pools, relaxation areas, the Algarve environment and the slower rhythm expected from a leisure stay.
The Algarve as a natural setting for wellbeing
Southern Portugal already offers many of the conditions associated with restorative travel: light, an outdoor lifestyle, proximity to the sea and a strong resort culture. Hilton Vilamoura uses that setting as part of the experience rather than merely as a geographic selling point.
A wellness property works best when the destination and the hotel reinforce one another. Outdoor areas, pools and the general atmosphere of the resort create a transition between structured spa treatments and the less formal forms of wellbeing that occur simply through space, climate and time.

Wellness as an experience across the whole resort
The difference between a hotel with a spa and a genuine wellness hotel lies in how far the idea of wellbeing extends. At Hilton Vilamoura, it is expressed not only in treatment areas but through pools, natural light, relaxation spaces and the way the resort encourages guests to change pace.
This matters because wellness travellers do not evaluate equipment in isolation. They respond to atmosphere, quality of care, ease of movement and the consistency of the experience from one part of the property to another.

The spa as a centre of gravity
The spa occupies a defining place in the hotel’s identity. Aquatic spaces, relaxation zones and treatment environments create a dedicated setting in which water and calm are central to the guest journey.
At this level, the challenge is to combine technical quality with hospitality. Sophisticated facilities have limited value if the guest experience feels clinical or disconnected from the rest of the hotel. Hilton Vilamoura’s approach is more integrated: the spa participates in the personality of the resort and extends the overall sense of care.

Resort life, golf and the freedom to choose a pace
Hilton Vilamoura also functions as a broader leisure resort. That versatility is important because wellbeing means different things to different guests. Some may focus on spa treatments and quiet time; others may combine relaxation with golf, swimming, dining or a more active stay.
The operational challenge is to keep those different experiences coherent. Public areas, rooms, restaurants, pools and spa facilities need to feel like parts of one hotel rather than separate products gathered on the same site.

Food and beverage as part of the restorative experience
Wellness also depends on the everyday moments of a stay. Breakfast, a relaxed lunch or dinner at the end of the day can either support or disrupt the atmosphere created by the rest of the resort. Food and beverage therefore has a role in maintaining the property’s sense of ease.
At Hilton Vilamoura, the dining environment contributes to the broader balance of the stay. The aim is not to turn every meal into a wellness programme, but to maintain the same quality of setting, service and rhythm found elsewhere in the resort.

Why Hilton Vilamoura received Wellness & Spa Hotel of the Year 2026
The European Hotel Awards Board selected Hilton Vilamoura because wellbeing is treated as a structure for the guest experience rather than a decorative marketing theme. The Award recognises the coherence between the spa, relaxation areas, resort environment, quality of the facilities, overall atmosphere and the way wellbeing is integrated into the identity of the stay.
The Board also considered the property’s relevance within one of Southern Europe’s major leisure and relaxation destinations. In the Algarve, the hotel has a natural context for wellness, but the distinction reflects how effectively the resort converts that context into a consistent hospitality proposition.
Under the representation of Miguel Afonso dos Santos, Hilton Vilamoura demonstrates a contemporary model of resort hospitality in which comfort, care, leisure and service are designed to reinforce one another. The Award therefore recognises not just a spa, but a wider culture of wellbeing.
