A true palace is not defined by grandeur alone. It becomes distinctive when architecture, service, gastronomy, history and the culture of its city begin to feel inseparable. On avenue Montaigne, Hôtel Plaza Athénée has built that relationship with Paris for more than a century, earning the title Palace Hotel of the Year 2026 at the European Hotel Awards.

Hôtel Plaza Athénée received the Palace Hotel of the Year 2026 distinction at the European Hotel Awards. Represented by François Delahaye, General Manager of Hôtel Plaza Athénée and Chief Operating Officer of Dorchester Collection, the property embodies a form of palace hospitality in which prestige is sustained through continuity: a recognisable house culture, highly precise service and the ability to evolve without losing its Parisian identity.

Avenue Montaigne is part of the hotel’s identity

Hôtel Plaza Athénée opened in 1913 in a building designed by architect Charles Lefebvre. From the beginning, its position on avenue Montaigne placed it inside the cultural and social life of Paris. The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées opened the same year nearby, while the later arrival of Christian Dior on the avenue strengthened a relationship with haute couture that became one of the hotel’s most recognisable signatures.

This connection with fashion matters because it is not simply decorative. The idea of sur mesure — attention to proportion, detail, material and individual preference — translates naturally from couture into palace hospitality. Plaza Athénée has the advantage of drawing on a relationship with Paris that has developed organically rather than being constructed as a branding exercise.

208 rooms and suites between French classicism and Art Deco

The hotel offers 154 rooms and 54 suites, for a total of 208 keys. The interiors move between two complementary languages: French classical references and a more graphic Art Deco expression. Some rooms and suites also frame views towards the Eiffel Tower and avenue Montaigne.

In a palace, the room has to manage a delicate balance. It needs to express the identity and confidence of the house while still feeling private enough for the guest to withdraw from the city. At Plaza Athénée, that combination of representation and intimacy is central to the experience.

Gastronomy keeps the palace connected to Parisian life

Food and beverage is one of the elements that prevents a palace from becoming a monument visited only for exceptional occasions. Hôtel Plaza Athénée brings together several distinct experiences, including its gastronomic restaurant, Le Relais Plaza, La Galerie, La Cour Jardin, Le Bar and seasonal terraces.

The gastronomic restaurant is recognised by the Michelin Guide, while Le Relais Plaza retains one of the hotel’s strongest Art Deco identities, with a design inaugurated in 1936 and inspired by the world of great ocean liners. The range allows the house to move between ceremony and everyday Parisian sociability without losing coherence.

Dior Spa and the culture of individual attention

The Dior Spa Plaza Athénée extends the hotel’s longstanding relationship with couture into wellbeing. The significance lies less in the pairing of two prestigious names than in the shared idea of individual attention. In both fashion and hospitality, luxury becomes meaningful when it feels considered for the person rather than simply impressive in the abstract.

That philosophy also reflects how palace expectations have evolved. Guests increasingly value a seamless sequence of experiences — arrival, room, dining, wellness, concierge and departure — rather than isolated moments of spectacle. The highest level of service often appears effortless precisely because a great deal of precision sits behind it.

François Delahaye and the value of long-term leadership

François Delahaye has served as General Manager of Hôtel Plaza Athénée since 1999 and as Chief Operating Officer of Dorchester Collection since 2006. That continuity is unusual in international luxury hospitality and gives his role particular importance in the story of the property.

Leading a palace with such a strong identity requires as much protection as transformation. The house must evolve with changing guest expectations while preserving the codes that make it immediately recognisable. Long-term leadership can create the conditions for that balance because decisions are made within an understanding of the hotel’s history rather than as isolated projects.

Why Hôtel Plaza Athénée received Palace Hotel of the Year 2026

The European Hotel Awards Board selected Hôtel Plaza Athénée because several dimensions converge with exceptional consistency: a historic Paris address, an organic relationship with haute couture, a major gastronomic identity, a coherent wellbeing universe, long-term leadership and a service culture that allows the property to operate as a living house rather than a ceremonial monument.

The Award is therefore not a reward for architecture, reputation or luxury in isolation. It recognises the way those elements support one another. Plaza Athénée can be grand without becoming impersonal, historic without becoming static, and internationally prestigious while remaining unmistakably Parisian.

That balance between heritage and movement, visibility and intimacy, is what gives meaning to the title Palace Hotel of the Year 2026. The house continues to demonstrate that the strongest palaces are not preserved in time; they are continuously interpreted.

A Paris palace that remains alive

More than a century after opening, Hôtel Plaza Athénée still belongs to the active life of Paris. Its identity is supported by history, but not trapped by it. The house continues to receive, dine, celebrate and reinvent details of the guest experience while retaining the personality that made the address famous in the first place.
