Regional hotel leadership only works when strategy remains connected to what happens inside individual hotels. After more than four decades with Hyatt, Michel Morauw brings an unusually deep operational memory to his role as Managing Director, North, EAME. That combination of field experience, owner relationships and regional responsibility earned him Managing Director of the Year 2026 at the European Hotel Awards.
Michel Morauw received the Managing Director of the Year 2026 distinction at the European Hotel Awards. Based in Zurich as Managing Director, North, EAME, he works across markets, brands, properties and ownership structures whose realities can differ substantially from one another.
A Hyatt career built from the hotel floor upwards
A graduate of EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne, Morauw joined Hyatt in 1984 through a training programme at Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. His career developed through operational roles, including food and beverage, before taking him across Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Morocco, the United Kingdom, France and the United States.
That path matters because regional strategy is easier to judge when the decision-maker has lived through the consequences of operational choices. Morauw has experienced openings, renovations, owner discussions, restaurant operations, team leadership and the twenty-four-hour reality of running hotels before moving into wider corporate responsibility.

From one property to a portfolio of markets
Morauw’s management experience has included properties such as Park Hyatt Washington, Hyatt Regency Paris Madeleine and Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile, as well as Andaz West Hollywood during the early development of a brand that would become central to Hyatt’s lifestyle strategy.
Moving from hotel General Manager to regional Managing Director changes the scale of leadership. The role becomes less about direct control and more about influence: supporting general managers, understanding owners, identifying market opportunities and ensuring that brand strategy can survive contact with local reality.

Growth without reducing hotels to numbers
International groups need growth, but a hotel is never only a development unit. Each property has an owner, a local market, a leadership team, employees and guests who judge the brand through one specific experience. The strongest regional executives understand that tension.
Morauw’s long operational background gives his leadership a practical reference point. Development, repositioning and brand decisions need to be commercially sound, but they also need to work for the people responsible for delivering them at property level.

Why Michel Morauw received Managing Director of the Year 2026
The European Hotel Awards Board selected Michel Morauw because his leadership combines exceptional continuity with Hyatt, deep hotel-operating experience and the ability to apply that knowledge at regional scale across diverse European markets.
The Board recognised more than longevity. His career demonstrates a progression from operations and individual hotel leadership to responsibility for owners, general managers, brands and development across a much broader geography. That evolution gives his strategic decisions a credibility grounded in lived hotel experience.
The distinction also reflects his approach to growth. The role of a Managing Director is not simply to increase the number of properties; it is to maintain constructive owner relationships, support leadership teams and ensure that expansion does not disconnect the group from the fundamentals of hospitality. Morauw’s record represents precisely that balance.

A new distinction for a new level of responsibility
Morauw had already been recognised by the European Hotel Awards in 2023 when his work was closely associated with Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile. The 2026 distinction does not repeat that earlier recognition. It corresponds to a real change in scale: from hotel and national responsibilities to leadership across a broader North EAME portfolio.
That progression is important. It shows why professional recognition should evolve with responsibility. Managing Director of the Year 2026 acknowledges a hotelier who has moved from the operating detail of individual properties to regional strategy without losing the operational culture that shaped his career.
